Hi there, due to the deteriorating service of Packet for Cisco NAS I have decided to install QNAP Firmware on a Cisco device. This is not a Step by Step guide and I can not say that it worked all well. The NSS 324 is in my opinion identical with the QNAP TS-459 Pro. So i used this guide to get in Recovery Mode of the NAS In this PDF you find the links to download your QNAP Firmware image.
I decide to save my old Cisco Firmware with dd dd if=/dev/sdb of=./backup.img bs=512 (Please check with fdisk -lu that sdb ist your DOM Flash) Please replace./backup.img with the path of your USB Stick (Maybe you have to mount it) Then i replace the Cisco Firmware with QNAP's once. Dd if=/PathtoImage of=/dev/sdb (In My Example dd if=/dev/sda/FTS-48-1.0.9.img of /dev/sdb ) One dd commands takes about 1,5 hours Now you have to restart the NAS. A Testing Firmware from Qnap should load and you can get there by a web interface.
The Web Interface is like the Quick Instalation Assistent when you start the Cisco Device the First Time. In my testing i get problems with Step 6 (Formating) in the Install Assistent but i can go around this when i take the 'No Disk initalation' function and then update the Firmware to the actually one (Without a Restart) A note by me: The Flash Storage is as type of construction only writeable about 10000x. So If you have questions please write a message. This is a preversion of my finished tutorial, but i have no time at the moment to write it more detailed. Sincerly yours Alexander Schuhmann NO WARRANTY THE HOW-TO IS DISTRIBUTED IN THE HOPE THAT IT WILL BE USEFUL, BUT WITHOUT ANY WARRANTY.

To make sure you do not run into any issues and render your NAS unsuable. This is only for those who need to recover the NSS300 series since they formatted or deleted by 'accident' the DOM (Disk-On-Module) in the NAS. I am not sure if you violate QNAP software licence policy when you install QNAP software on a 'non-QNAP' device. You better check. When you dump the DOM from a running NAS device with the 'dd' command to an image file on a usb stick and use the image file to re-flash another NAS (identical model) using QNAP's or Cisco's DOM recovery procedure you will have the firmware already installed. So this is a good method to have a 'running system' backup of your NAS (like Alexander did) When you use the QNAP provided FTSxxx files or Cisco Factory firmware you will need to rebuild the system and load the actual firmware in a a later step.
Use port 8080 to connect to the device. Sometimes you have to manually start the http server on the NAS after the NAS booted from the reflashed DOM. # /etc/init.d/Qthttpd.sh start Using the Installation Wizard it takes quite some time to rebuild the system, be patient. You will need at least one HD installed which will be formatted.
Hello Alexander, As I experience many problems with the Cisco firmware I too consider to install the QNAP firmware to my Cisco NAS. The biggest issue that is holding me from doing so, until now, is the fact that I have over 3TB on data on my NSS326 and no backup. I know it's not very smart, but that's a fact for now, although I can backup the really important data.

My question is: Will I loose my data when changing the firmware from Cisco to QNAP? What are your results in this respect? Regards, Klaas de Jong.

I understand there is no official support about this, but any hint would be appreciated without persecution Thanks. I would just march out, get a cheap 3tb external drive - set your one-touch button to copy to the external usb port on front and give'er.
Backup your stuff first, just in case. I would probably wait it out for the proper upgrade, then backup, flash and restore data in case not all went well. As ticked as I am about this whole firmware fiasco and crappy mozy performance, I am looking forward to migrating a client nas to qnap firmware. I have a qnap at home and recently tried Elephant Drive and I am VERY impressed with speed and features over Mozy.
Hi Alexander not sure what you're expectation was and why you are disappointed by Cisco. The Cisco NSS is being marketed as a Cisco device,i.e there is no mentioning that this is based on/or manufactured by QNAP or uses QNAP software (well other than the serial number starts with QNP;-) and the expectation is not being set that we compete in the same space.

The target market is small business (hence the radius server and the syslog server included) and reselling via partners. It has to be easily installed and operated also by users with no Unix knowledge. This is not meant to be an open Unix box but rather a easy to use, fast SMB NAS which can be installed and operated by 'non-IT' specialists and efficiently supported by a tech support center. The Cisco firmware is based on QNAP firmware, just adapted with Cisco Look and Feel and Cisco lock-in. With the Cisco NSS300 Smart Storage you get 5 years warranty vs. 1 year from QNAP and you can purchase a cost efficient service contract which will give you next day repalcement of a faulty device by Cisco.
Having said that as you pointed out in this thread you can reflash the device with QNAP software as you can also install other Linux derivates. With the next Cisco firmware you can install the QNAP firmware like any other software update. That is working right now inside Cisco. The release schedules so far have been roughly every 4-6 month.
1.4 came out in May. So 1.5 will probably come out Sep/Oct/Nov 2011. In the SMB market there is really no need to release new firmare every month or so. (unless you have need to fix severe bugs) The partner will not go around to every installation and perform software upgrades every month in a production environment.
'Never change a running system' Greetigs Jo. Mr Kern, Your email tone seems to suggest that the user community does nothing but wait for upgrades to show up and blindly pushed whatever is out there for the sole sake of having the latest and the greatest version. I manage a fleet of 25 Mac and moving to OSX Lion was merely an option.
I am also a proponent of the -if-it-works-do-not-screw-with-it approach but it is not the case here. That is definitely an unsollicitated problem - something that came from the left field. If Microsoft had pushed something that would have made access to the NSS inoperative, I bet that Cisco reaction time would have been much faster. For me, AFP not working IS a severe bug. Do not treat your customers like a bunch of spoiled brats. Regards, Claude.
Backup to QNAP NAS Drive It's amazing for personal users, small businesses or large enterprises to own a QNAP NAS Drive. Comparing with the 'real' physical external hard drive, QNAP's Network Attached Storage (NAS) showcases some obvious advantages when choosing it as a backup drive. QNAP NAS are systems that consist of one or more hard drives that are constantly connected to the internet, which are all available for users to backup Windows data such as system, documents, working sheets, game data and media files like photos, videos, and music. Most of all, rather than taking it everywhere, it is placed at home and always accessible at any time and anywhere. To back up to QNAP NAS drive from Windows, there are many ways can make it happen.
But here, we recommend you EaseUS Todo Backup and offers a complete tutorial for QNAP NAS drive users who want to backup Windows data to QNAP NAS drive daily or nightly without interruption. How to Backup Windows System & Data to QNAP NAS Drive by Using EaseUS Todo Backup? It's & powerful that provides multiple backup options to QNAP and instant disaster recovery. Download and install it on your Windows machine, and make it detect the QNAP NAS drive.
The VM backup process puts an extra load on your environment – source hosts, storages, and networks are affected. The best way to offload your infrastructure resources is to ensure that the backups are completed in the shortest time possible. NAKIVO Backup & Replication provides great features that improve VM backup speed, such as forever-incremental backups with CBT/RCT, and. However, when NAKIVO Backup & Replication is installed on QNAP NAS, VM backup performance can be increased even further. The performance is increased due to the fact that NAKIVO Backup & Replication can write backups directly to NAS disks, bypassing the overhead of network protocols, such as NFS and CIFS.
As a result, VM backup and replication jobs can complete up to 2X faster vs. VM-based backup solutions! Ensure Reliability of VM Backup If your backup software runs in a VM, chances are that any incident in the virtualized environment will render your backup software unusable. Losing your production VMs and the ability to restore from your backups is a true disaster. By installing NAKIVO Backup & Replication on a QNAP NAS, you can separate backup software and backup storage from your virtualized environment.

This way you free your infrastructure resources from backup workloads and ensure that you can recover your data anytime and anywhere, even if some of your VMware or Hyper-V servers are down. A VM backup appliance can be located onsite or offsite and can be easily moved to a new location in case of a disaster. One physical device contains everything you need for recovery – hardware, software, and VM backups from which you can restore.
When backup software is installed in a VM, it consumes the server’s CPU and RAM, which could be used to run production workloads. In addition, backup data would have to travel over the network from the backup server to its destination, loading the server’s network and affecting the performance of all VMs on that server. Instead of purchasing a separate backup server and a storage server for your backups, you can get a single QNAP NAS and use it to both process and store your backups. By doing this, you offload your virtual infrastructure from backup tasks and improve backup performance. NAKIVO Backup & Replication combines affordable pricing with minimal system requirements: the product can be installed even on entry-level QNAP NAS, such as TS-451U.

And when it comes to enterprise-level data protection, the combination of NAKIVO Backup & Replication and QNAP NAS is at least 5X less expensive than purpose-built backup appliances with similar hardware and software characteristics.
